Four generations of the Fortin family have already led the family business that is J Gérard Fortin & Associates. Since 1936, we have been serving Montrealers and the entire province of Quebec for all their insurance needs. Just as the Fortin generations succeed one another, many of our clients remain loyal to us across generations as well.

Mr. Louis Bouvier, a retiree from Crown Life of Canada where he served as Superintendent of Agencies for the eastern region, founded a life insurance agency that also offered property and casualty insurance. He set it up in the basement of his family home on Papineau Street in Montreal. A few years later, his son Georges, an actor, joined him to supplement his income. The business was then named Louis and Georges Bouvier Insurance.
Louis Bouvier’s son-in-law, J. Gérard Fortin, married to his daughter Lucille, joined the business, which then became Bouvier and Fortin. In 1948, upon Louis Bouvier’s death, J. Gérard Fortin purchased the client portfolio, and the company became J. Gérard Fortin Inc.
His eldest son, Jean Fortin, joined the business, though he temporarily left for Toronto before returning. Over the years, the company grew and successively moved to St-Hubert Street and then Laurier Street in Montreal.
Jean Fortin purchased his father’s business and decided to give it new momentum by renaming it J. Gérard Fortin & Associates Inc., reflecting the company’s growth and increasing professionalism.
Fernand Drapeau, a longtime friend of Jean, joined the business. The company then adopted the name J. Gérard Fortin Drapeau & Associates Inc. This new partnership required more space, leading the agency to relocate first to Rosemont Boulevard and later to Bélanger Street in Montreal, where it remains today, further strengthening its local presence.
Jean’s eldest son, Bruno, joined the family business, bringing a fresh perspective and new expertise. That same year, Fernand Drapeau acquired his father’s office and chose to pursue his own path, which led to the company returning to the name J. Gérard Fortin & Associates Inc.
Jean’s younger son, Vincent, later joined the family business, further strengthening generational continuity and actively contributing to its development.
The company acquired the office previously owned by Fernand Drapeau, strengthening its infrastructure and continuing its growth in a steady and sustainable way.
Jean Fortin retired. To ensure the company’s continuity, 20% of the shares were sold to a major insurer, while the remaining 80% were equally divided between Bruno and Vincent, representing the fourth generation of the family at the helm of the business.
The company obtained a license from the Autorité des marchés financiers as a Financial Services Firm, specializing in property and casualty insurance as well as life and health insurance. It has 23 employees, works with over 40 insurers, has been a Lloyd’s of London representative for more than 25 years, and positions itself at the forefront of technology, with its headquarters located at 3091 Bélanger Street in Montreal.
