Earthquakes

Although Quebec is considered a moderately seismic region, history and recent data show that earthquakes are a real threat. The 1663 Charlevoix earthquake, the strongest recorded in Quebec, had an estimated magnitude of 7. More recent events, such as the Mont-Laurier quake in 1990 (magnitude 5) and the Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts quakes in 1996 and 1997 (magnitudes 4.4 and 4.3), remind us that seismic activity can occur at any time. Depending on your location, the probability of a strong earthquake occurring within the next 50 years ranges from 5 % to 20 %.

Even low-magnitude earthquakes can damage buildings and infrastructure, highlighting the importance of preparation.

Home insurance and earthquake risk

Most Quebec homeowners are not covered for earthquakes. Only 4 % actually have protection, while 33 % mistakenly believe they are covered. Standard home insurance policies do not include earthquake damage.

Purchasing earthquake insurance helps protect your home and belongings and ensures you can rebuild or repair your property and cover additional living expenses if necessary.

Prevention and preparedness

To reduce risks, consider:

  • Strengthening your home and infrastructure
  • Creating a family emergency plan
  • Stocking essential supplies
  • Discussing earthquake coverage options with your broker
